Religion, Dante’s Inferno, and Inspiration: Interview with Devangelic

Welcome brutal death metal maniacs! Today, I have something really special for you: an interview with Italian brutal death metal savages Devangelic, who just released their new album Phlegethon back on October 27th via Comatose Music.

These guys really don’t need an introduction; tearing up the scene since 2014, Devangelic spawned incredible music on releases like Resurrection Denied in 2014, and Deprecating the Scriptures in 2015. It’s time to get their opinions on religion, their sound and what to take from it, and some talk about their new album and their plans for the future. Let’s here it from Devangelic!

Tell us about the history of the band. What was the idea behind Devangelic when you guys came together?

Daemian: Devangelic came to life in 2014 with a clear aim; playing brutal death metal with no compromises. Sometimes a simple goal may be hard as fuck to achieve, and that’s why we had two line-up changes during the last three years. I think the current line-up is outstanding, though; we work together and we like the atmosphere in the band.

What’s the general impression you’d like to leave the listener with when they listen to your music? 

Daemian: Uncompromising brutality. If you like BDM, listen to our albums and you’ll be satisfied. There are a lot of bands playing death metal this year and most of them are trying to stand out from the scene by focusing on “originality”. It seems to me that they are afraid to simply play death metal because they could be boring. The fear of being trivial is the reason why you may hear a fucking flute in a death metal album; no offence, of course. How long will it take to hear a saxophone? Or a piano? What about disco black metal? I bet the Disgorge guys don’t even know how to write the word saxophone! Jokes aside, we just want play some death metal; trust me, it’s enough!

What relevance does religion have in your home country of Italy? Has the state of religious expression affected some of your songwriting?

Daemian: Unfortunately, religion is deeply involved with every single thing in Italy. If you watch the evening news you can see how much attention the media pay to religion; every single newspaper writes about the pope, politicians meet him to get his support (and more votes). I think the time has come for a true secular State.

Why is anti-Christianity such a passionate topic for your music? Everything from the lyrics, the album titles, the cover art…it’s pretty blasphemous!

Daemian: Ahaha, well, thank you! You know, in Italy people think that Christianity is not only a religion, but a main part of our culture as well. They forget (or pretend to) that about 2000 years ago if you had gone to the Coliseum on a Sunday morning, you would have seen the classic show; Christians getting sent to the lions. Christianity is not our culture, it is not our aim, and most of all, it is not what we need. We thought: how good would it be to destroy it from within?

How do you feel about other Abrahamic religions like Islam and Judaism?

Daemian: Nothing changes between one religion and the other; it’s always about rules you must respect, things to deny, and there is always someone to bow down to. During the last century, there were several philosophers who talked about the uselessness of religion nowadays and….I better shut my mouth up. New album could start from here, ahahah!

How do you come up with lyrics?

Daemian: It’s a long process. If you don’t want to be trivial, you have to change the lyrics day by day and try to melt them with the music by using the right words in the right moments. We used to start from the details, but honestly I don’t know if it’s the right choice; however, it seemed to work for us!

Let’s talk about the new record. What’s different on Phlegethon than on Resurrection Denied?

Daemian: Phlegethon is more complex than Resurrection Denied; it’s not only crushing music, but it has a focused atmosphere around it. The new album is darker, faster and more expressive. Resurrection Denied was more about “the quantity” because it was the first album, but on Phlegethon we’ve chosen “the quality”; without giving up the quantity, of course.

Tell us about the creation process of Phlegethon.

Mario: Phlegethon is the result of a very long process that lasted about 3 years! The first song was “Abominated Impurity Of The Oppressed”, which I consider as a sort of bridge between Resurrection Denied and the new album. I wrote almost all the music, but we (the band) arranged everything together. Our new drummer Marco helped us a lot during the arrangements, including the amazing drum patterns!

It says on your Bandcamp page that the new album is based off of Dante’s Inferno. How much of that story is replicated in the music? Is your music supposed to tell the story, or simply evoke the same feelings?

Daemian: Well, the lyrics follow Dante through his travel from the start to the deepest circles of the Inferno, so I could say that we’re telling a story, but when you read the lyrics while listening to the music, you understand that it’s not a story; it’s a feeling. I suggest you listen to the album and read the lyrics at the same time (try to follow Paolo if you can), so you can truly get the results of our effort.

What is your vision of hell?

Daemian: I don’t think hell exists. But if I’m wrong, hell must be a great place where I can get in touch with a shitload of old friends who loved death metal in their past lives!

Why do you feel that a story like Dante’s Inferno fits into the style of brutal death metal, both conceptually and emotionally?

Daemian: There is no style to fit, just feelings to express in my honest opinion. When we talked about Dante’s Inferno for the first time, we knew straightaway that the subject was perfect.

Do you see Devangelic doing more concept albums in the future?

Daemian: Yes, absolutely.

And speaking of the future, what can fans expect? Any tours, splits, or other things you guys are planning on doing?

Mario: We are planning an intense 2018 with a lot of shows/festival in Europe, plus an exclusive show in USA at the Las Vegas Deathfest. In addition to that, we are booking a full tour at around September 2018. We are also in the early stages of the songwriting for the third album!

Describe the Devangelic live experience on-stage. What are the audiences like?

Daemian: We definitely love playing in front of our fans; every time we go on the stage, we feel the warmth the crowd gives us and we feel very much in our element.

Any bands you guys would love to tour with one day?

Daemian: Hell yes: Disgorge, Condemned, Disentomb, Cannibal Corpse…there are a lot of great bands out there, but honestly, these are our sources for inspiration from the start.

From each of you, could you recommend some awesome underground brutal death metal?

Whole Band: We could name some Italian bands, such as: Unbirth, Demiurgon, Dr.Gore, Zora, Ade, Bloodtruth, Corpsefucking Art. There are a lot of great bands out there.
